west gidgegannup volunteer bushfire brigade
This volunteer Bushfire Brigade has been operational in our area since 1981. Whilst originally catering for large rural properties it is now experiencing a significant growth in population from smaller 5-acre developments.

Fighting a bush fire Fighting a bush fire

As the population and density of properties increases, the resultant fire risk also becomes greater. The need therefore to maintain an active brigade to respond over our large area necessitates increased support from the community.

membership
Any resident and / or landowner in the Gidgegannup area west of Reserve and Stoneville Roads is invited to participate. If interested, contact any of the committee members below.
training & personal protective equipment
All new members will be given formal FESA basic training consisting of 8 modules over one weekend. Overalls, boots and a protective helmet with face shield are issued to members free of charge. Additional formal FESA training is available for volunteers who desire to increase their knowledge of fire and incident management.

The brigade also meets for a training night at 7.30pm on the second Monday of each month at the Gidgegannup Fire Shed. Traditionally June and July are our rest period and no meeting is held. These meetings are normally used to hone skills in equipment use (as below) with radio, GPS and 4WD training included.
equipment
Currently the brigade has the following equipment:
- 3.4 Rural, 2800 lts, 4WD, doesn’t carry structural equipment
   Location: Toodyay Road
- 3 x light tankers (Landcruisers) with 550 lt tanks
Locations: Cameron, Reen and Berry Roads
roster
All active members who are trained, and available, are put on the roster, which generally is from the first week in October to the end of March the following year. We have four teams that are rostered every four weeks. If any members are not available for the roster they advise their fire boss to ensure capability can be organised.
roster requirements
We understand this is a volunteer brigade but expect during the fire season that rostered teams pick up vehicles and pagers for their weekend. Each team should ensure their vehicles are ready for action and complete a radio check at 08:30 Saturday during the fire season. Fuel or other needs can be obtained from the Gidgegannup BP or Shell. Each team has a trained fire boss who is available to coordinate efforts and support the team.
annual social gatherings
Annual General Meeting
Held in late July each year at the Gidgegannup Fire Shed with all the West Gidgegannup community invited for a social evening after a formal meeting is held.

Christmas Party
Held at various locations during December each year (generally a member’s property) with again all the community invited.

Both events have meat (generally a spit and sausages), buns, drinks (soft and alcohol) and nibblies supplied at the brigades cost. Attending families to bring a salad or sweet to share.
